Atītaṁ nānvāgameyya, Nappaṭikaṅkhe anāgataṁ;
Yadatītaṁ pahīnaṁtaṁ, Appattañca anāgataṁ.
Paccuppannañca yo dhammaṁ, Tattha tattha vipassati;
Asaṁhīraṁ asaṅkuppaṁ – Taṁ viddhā manubrūhaye;
Ajjeva kiccamātappaṁ, Ko jaññā maraṇaṁ suve?
Na hi no saṅgarantena, Mahāsenena maccunā.
Evaṁ vihāri-ṁātāpiṁ, Ahoratta-matanditaṁ,
Taṁ ve bhaddekarattoti, Santo ācikkhate Munī’ti.
One should not revive the past, Nor for the future pine.
For the past is already gone, And the future not yet arrived.
Instead let them know the present – there, right there, as it arises.
Let them know and be sure of it, Invincible, Unshakeable.
Today the effort should be made; Tomorrow death may come, who knows?
And there will be no bargaining, Not with Death and his mighty horde.
One who dwells ardently, From dusk till dawn’s first light.
The peaceful sage has declared: “They have had an auspicious night.”
